President Obama Signs Health Reform Into Law

MCDC Endorsement Convention

Last night the Montgomery County Democratic Committee held its endorsement convention. Although many people were most concerned about the senatorial endorsement, I was eager to see what the results would be for the race in the 6th Congressional District or more specifically how Dr. Manan Trivedi would fare, who was the candidate for whom I was rooting. There are so many reasons I like Manan. He’s a progressive without ambiguity, a physician, Iraq War veteran, healthcare advisor during the run up to Obama’s election, and he’s a grassroots believer. Since Manan was still in the navy, he had to enter the race months later than his opponent. He also didn’t have the personal wealth of the other guy. Thus, the other guy had advantages that Manan didn’t enjoy.

The vote was taken by secret ballot, and it took some time to count the votes. I was on the edge of my seat waiting. Frankly, I was hoping that Manan would at least have a decent showing – something that wasn’t an embarrassment. Finally, the results were announced. Manan won over 70% of the vote. A blowout!

Obama visits Montco to talk health care - 8 Mar 2010

There were a few naysayers at the Obama health care event at Arcadia today, recalling the usual shibboleths about abortion and death panels, but his welcome was overwhelmingly positive. The roar from the crowd at his introduction was literally deafening.

Right Wingers Wreak Havoc on Philadelphia Town Meeting

 Update: Audio report from WHYY

Denise Dennis on Huffington Post:

Philadelphia, PA -- August 2 - This afternoon, at the National
Constitution Center in Philadelphia, I saw the face of ignorance and
hate--and it wasn't pretty.

When Health and Human Services Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius and
Senator Arlen Specter (D-PA) came to the National Constitution Center
to answer questions about health care reform, they were greeted by an
overflow crowd of approximately 400 people, the majority of whom were
supporters with legitimate questions.

Lee,

Really glad you mentioned Michael Pollan's review of Julie and Julia http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/02/magazine/02cooking-t.html?pagewanted=1&sq=Julie%20and%20Julia&st=cse&scp=3-D... He's a gifted, entertaining writer with incredible CONTENT, too... A great read all on it's own.

But it also just hit me, when reading the following snippets on page 4 of his article, that if you swapped in "democracy" for Pollan's "cooking" language, it's an exact description of our political culture, too!

End Government Run Health Care Now!

Best Person Of the Week:

Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-NY) for proposing an amendment banning Medicare. The Republicans, who claim to be loudly opposed to government-run healthcare, voted against the amendment.
