Beyond the Spin: A lesson from Jesse Jackson's run - Inquirer 8/21

Submitted by Ben Burrows on August 21, 2008 - 10:14pm.

To the editor:

I am puzzled. Some months ago when Rev. Jesse Jackson had a microphone
malfunction, explaining what parts of Barack Obama's below-the-belt
anatomy he would remove, I cited the same "Hymietown" microphone
malfunction that George Curry recently cited -- as a reason why we
should discount Jackson's threat, and as a reason why the news media
should immediately have belittled the whole incident. Jackson, like
George Bush, apparently has no sense of tact around live microphones.
Like the famous "Yo, Blair!" malfunction, the Jackson threat to perform
a Lorena Bobbitt operation on the presidential candidate should not have
been taken seriously. Sadly, the Inquirer refused to print that letter,
and carried stories about the remark for several days thereafter
